The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for stronger collaboration among traditional institutions, security agencies and local communities to promote peace, security and development across the country, while assuring police personnel that ongoing policing reforms will not affect their careers or welfare.

IGP Disu gave the assurance on Monday during a working visit to Jigawa State, where he paid a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi, attended the 8th Executive Committee Meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council (NTRC) in Dutse, and addressed officers and men of the Jigawa State Police Command.

Speaking at the meeting of the Northern Traditional Rulers’ Council, the IGP commended the council, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, for its contributions to dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and national unity; DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Force spokesperson, disclosed in a statement.

According to the statement, IGP Disu stressed the importance of traditional rulers in intelligence gathering, conflict resolution, community engagement and early warning systems, noting that closer cooperation between traditional institutions and security agencies remains crucial to tackling insecurity and fostering development, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

During his meeting with Governor Namadi, the police chief reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to working closely with the Jigawa State Government and other stakeholders to strengthen security, public safety and community policing initiatives.

Addressing officers and men of the state command, Disu praised their dedication and professionalism in maintaining peace and security across Jigawa State.

He reiterated the commitment of the Force leadership to improving operational efficiency, personnel welfare, career advancement and service delivery.

The IGP also addressed concerns over ongoing discussions on the proposed establishment of state police, assuring officers that there was no reason for apprehension.

According to him, the proposed reform is aimed at strengthening the nation’s policing framework while retaining a strong national police institution capable of addressing interstate and national security challenges.

He assured personnel that their welfare, career progression, pensions and other entitlements would remain protected under any future policing arrangement.

IGP Disu further urged officers to remain disciplined, professional and committed to their constitutional duties, warning that the Force would continue to enforce a zero-tolerance policy against corruption, extortion, abuse of office and other forms of misconduct.

He also encouraged personnel to embrace intelligence-led policing, deepen community engagement and uphold the highest standards of integrity and respect for human rights.

The Inspector-General reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening public trust, enhancing operational effectiveness and partnering with governments, traditional institutions and communities to promote peace, security and national development.
