ICCES Finalizes Security Plans for Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Bye-Election

The Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in Kano State has concluded arrangements to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and credible bye-election in the Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency scheduled for 20 June 2026.

CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, Kano State Police Command spokesperson, disclosed in a statement that the committee resolved during a strategic meeting held on Tuesday at the Conference Hall of the Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano.

The meeting was chaired by the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Kano State, Amb. Zango Abdu, while the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, was represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Lawal Isa Mani.

Representatives of key security and government agencies attended the meeting, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Others are Nigeria Correctional Service, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), and the Federal Fire Service.

Speaking at the meeting, Amb. Zango Abdu underscored the importance of inter-agency collaboration in safeguarding the electoral process and ensuring that eligible voters exercise their franchise without fear or intimidation.

He disclosed that INEC had completed all necessary preparations for the bye-election and commended security agencies for their professionalism and support.

The REC expressed confidence in the security architecture put in place and called for sustained cooperation among stakeholders as the election date approaches.

Representing the Commissioner of Police, DCP Lawal Isa Mani reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to providing a secure environment throughout the electoral process.

He revealed that comprehensive deployment plans had been developed to cover polling units, collation centres, and other critical locations in Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Local Government Areas.

He noted that the security situation in Kano State remains stable and urged ICCES members to strengthen intelligence sharing to enable proactive responses to potential threats.

DCP Mani also warned against the spread of fake news and misinformation capable of inciting violence or eroding public confidence in the electoral process, urging citizens and media organizations to verify information through official channels before dissemination.

The committee reviewed security threat assessments, finalized deployment strategies, and agreed on mechanisms for rapid response to any breach of peace.

Discussions also focused on voter education, protection of electoral materials, and enforcement of election-day movement restrictions in line with the Electoral Act.

ICCES reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on electoral violence, vote-buying, and other electoral offences, while charging security personnel to remain neutral, professional, and committed to their responsibilities before, during, and after the election.

The Kano State Police Command, on behalf of ICCES, assured residents of Dawakin Kudu and Warawa Federal Constituency of adequate security throughout the electoral process and encouraged eligible voters to participate peacefully in the bye-election.
