As part of the strategic efforts aimed at easing water stress and expanding access to clean and reliable water supply for residents in Kano State, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has approved the installation of solar powered boreholes across various communities as an emergency response initiative.

This was disclosed on Tuesday by the Acting Commissioner for Water Resources, Dr. Dahiru Muhammad Hashim, who said the initiative reflects the sustained commitment of the administration of the Governor to addressing water supply challenges and improving the wellbeing of citizens across Kano State.

According to Dr. Hashim, the intervention is expected to deliver about 4,150,000 litres of water daily, directly benefiting an estimated 830,000 residents across water stressed communities in the state.

He explained that the the governor approved 166 solar-powered boreholes and each of them is designed to provide approximately 25,000 litres of water daily and serve about 5,000 people.

The Acting Commissioner noted that the installation of the 166 solar-powered boreholes represents the first phase of the initiative, with additional boreholes expected to be approved and deployed in more communities across Kano State.

Dr. Hashim further noted that the project forms part of the government’s immediate response measures to reduce the impact of water shortages in communities while broader rehabilitation and expansion efforts continue across the water sector.

“The administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf remains determined to provide practical and sustainable solutions to the water needs of the people.

“This initiative is another major step toward improving access to potable water and strengthening public infrastructure across Kano State,” Dr. Hashim stated.

The Acting Commissioner further recalled that the rehabilitation of the Tamburawa and Challawa Water Treatment Plants has already commenced following the governor’s approval and the subsequent award of contracts for the projects.

He explained that the ongoing rehabilitation works are expected to significantly boost water production and improve distribution across Kano metropolis and surrounding communities.

Dr. Hashim added that the state government is pursuing a comprehensive approach toward revitalising the water sector through infrastructure upgrades, expansion of supply systems, and the deployment of alternative energy-powered solutions to guarantee sustainability and efficiency.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Ministry of Water Resources to continue supporting the governor’s vision of ensuring reliable and equitable water supply for the growing population of Kano State.

The Kano State Government also urged residents to support ongoing interventions by protecting public water facilities and promoting responsible water usage for the benefit of all communities.
