Yusuf Muhammadu Buhari, son of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency in Katsina State after a landslide victory in the party’s primary election.
Yusuf defeated Auwal Lawal Musa, son of former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawal Musa Daura, in a primary described by party stakeholders as peaceful and transparent.
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of the APC constituency committee and party leaders in accordance with the party’s internal democracy guidelines.
Announcing the results, the Returning Officer, Hon. Lawal Garba, said the election followed due electoral procedures and reflected the will of party members across the constituency.
According to the official figures released, the constituency had 35,825 registered voters, out of which 18,263 were accredited, while 17,832 votes were cast during the exercise.
In Daura Local Government Area, Yusuf Buhari secured 6,386 votes out of 6,708 valid votes cast, while Auwal Lawal Musa garnered 322 votes.
In Mai’Adua Local Government Area, Yusuf polled 5,102 votes against 137 votes recorded by his opponent.
Similarly, in Sandamu Local Government Area, Yusuf won overwhelmingly with 5,849 votes, while Auwal secured only 21 votes.
At the end of the collation, Hon. Lawal Garba declared Yusuf Muhammadu Buhari winner of the APC primary election with a total of 17,342 votes. In comparison, Auwal Lawal Musa polled 480 votes across the three local government areas.
The primary election reflected the APC’s adoption of direct primaries in constituencies where consensus arrangements failed, in line with provisions of the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.
