The Abia State chapter of the Labour Party has elected a new leadership team following the successful conduct of its State Congress in Umuahia.

The congress, held on Saturday, produced Hon. Peter Azubuike as State Chairman and Chuks Akanmadu as State Secretary, alongside other members of the State Working Committee.

Party stakeholders described the exercise as peaceful, transparent, and a reflection of growing unity within the party’s ranks in the state.

Addressing party members at the event, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, commended the orderly conduct of the congress, noting that it signaled a new phase of cohesion and shared purpose.

“This marks the beginning of a new era. The days of working at cross purposes are behind us. We are now united in moving the party forward,” the governor said, while assuring the new leadership of his administration’s continued support.

Otti also stressed the need for a smooth transition, adding that the incoming executives would operate from a befitting party secretariat.

He further acknowledged the contributions of the outgoing leadership led by Mr. Emmanuel Oti, praising their role in sustaining party stability during challenging periods at the national level.

Chairman of the State Congress Committee, Hon. Acho Obioma, said the process followed earlier ward and local government congresses, with most candidates emerging through consensus. He described the exercise as credible and consistent with democratic standards.

In the same vein, the State Congress Coordinator, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke, noted that the exercise complied with relevant legal provisions, including the party constitution and the Electoral Act, adding that it forms part of preparations for the party’s upcoming national convention.

In his acceptance remarks, the newly elected chairman, Azubuike, pledged to deepen the party’s grassroots mobilization and strengthen its structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We will work across every part of the state to consolidate our position and expand the party’s reach,” he said.

Other members of the State Working Committee include Ibe Nkeiruka Eucharia (Deputy Chairman), Joy Ngozi Anyanwu (Treasurer), Emenike Iroegbu (Publicity Secretary), and Ben Ikechukwu Oti (Organising Secretary).

The congress attracted party leaders, stakeholders, and supporters from across Abia State, underscoring renewed commitment to unity and political consolidation ahead of future elections.
