Kano State Government has inaugurated the Kano State Media and Information Policy Committee as part of its commitment to strengthening transparency, accountability, and effective communication in governance.

Inaugurating the Committee, the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Faruq Ibrahim, stated that the present administration has carefully identified and selected seasoned information managers and professionals as members of the Committee to develop a comprehensive Media and Information Policy for the State.

He explained that the initiative aligns with the administration’s broader commitment to supporting all sectors of government with well-structured policies that will guide their operations and enhance service delivery.

Umar Faruq further outlined the terms of reference of the Committee to include examining the transition committee documents with a view to developing a robust state policy framework, convening stakeholders’ meetings to deliberate on proposals, and drafting comprehensive policy document.

He added that the Committee is also expected to engage relevant government agencies, media practitioners, and civil society organizations, as well as undertake all necessary steps toward achieving its mandate.

In his remarks, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, who serves as Chairman of the Committee, emphasized the importance of the initiative in addressing existing gaps in policy development within the media and information sector.

He noted that findings have shown that many critical policies guiding the sector have not been formally established or endorsed, thereby limiting effective engagement within the information ecosystem.

According to him, this development has made it imperative for Kano State to establish a well-defined Media and Information Policy that will serve as a guide for government–media relations.

The Commissioner further stated that while other states have developed such frameworks, Kano State is determined to adopt global best practices that will enhance accountability, transparency, and professionalism.

Comrade Waiya stressed that the State has remained media-friendly and has maintained a cordial working relationship with media practitioners, adding that the new policy will further strengthen and formalize this relationship.

He explained that the Committee was deliberately constituted to reflect inclusivity, with representation drawn from media practitioners, veteran 5information managers, academia, and other critical stakeholders.

This, he said, would ensure that diverse ideas and professional expertise are harnessed in producing a comprehensive and implementable policy document.

The Commissioner expressed optimism that the Committee will come up with a policy framework that will not only guide government engagement with the media but also support the growth and development of media and information outlets in the State.

He reiterated that the ultimate goal is to build and sustain a mutually beneficial relationship between the government and media practitioners.

The Commissioner assured that members of the Committee will work diligently to deliver on their mandate and appreciated the confidence reposed in them by the government.
