The Kano State Police Command has arrested a three-man syndicate involved in tricycle theft and recovered eight stolen tricycles across the state.
The Command disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by its spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, that the breakthrough followed an intelligence-led operation carried out on 26 March 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. by officers attached to the Kwakwachi Police Division along Airport Road, Kano.
According to the statement, during the patrol, the operatives intercepted a suspect, identified as Abubakar Sidi, a resident of Kunkumi Village in Kaduna State, who was found riding a tricycle bearing registration number NSR 85 WD and Karota number KMC 1084.
The suspect reportedly failed to give a satisfactory explanation regarding ownership of the vehicle, prompting his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on the directive of the Commissioner of Police for further investigation.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspect had allegedly deceived the owner of the tricycle at Emir Palace Road in Kano and, in collaboration with members of his syndicate, dispossessed him of the vehicle.
Police authorities further confirmed the arrest of two accomplices, Abba Babura and Babangida Haruna, in connection with the crime. Seven additional tricycles reportedly stolen by the syndicate and sold in Babura, Jigawa State, were also recovered during the operation.
The Police Command has urged members of the public, particularly tricycle operators, to remain vigilant and exercise caution in their interactions with passengers.
It specifically warned against accepting drinks or gifts from unknown individuals and encouraged the reporting of any suspicious activities to security agencies.
The Command also called on individuals who may have lost their tricycles through similar methods to visit the Police Public Relations Office at Bompai Police Headquarters, Kano, or contact the Investigating Police Officer through the provided channel for possible identification and recovery of their property.
Commending the officers involved in the operation, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intensifying efforts in tackling crime and ensuring the safety of residents across the state.
