The Commissioner for the Kano State Ministry for Public Procurement, Project Monitoring and Evaluation (MPPPME), Comrade Nura Ma’aji Sumaila, on Tuesday, conducted an on-site inspection of an ongoing erosion control project in Rimi town, Sumaila.

The project, being executed under the supervision of the Kano State Ministry for Environment and Climate Change as the client ministry, underscores the state government’s commitment to tackling environmental challenges and protecting vulnerable communities from climate-related disasters.

The intervention involves the construction of concrete drainage channels and reinforcement of embankments to reduce the devastating effects of seasonal flooding and soil erosion.

The project spans areas from Rimi Special Primary School to nearby riverbank crossings and adjoining settlements, communities that have suffered repeated environmental damage over the years.

During the inspection, officials from the Civil Infrastructure Department of the Public Procurement Ministry commended the engineers and contractors for the progress recorded so far.

The monitoring team expressed satisfaction that the execution aligns with the approved Bill of Quantities, project specifications, and stipulated timelines.

Speaking at the site, Comrade Sumaila emphasized that effective erosion control infrastructure is crucial for safeguarding homes, farmlands, roads, and public facilities from recurring destruction.

He noted that proactive monitoring guarantees value for money and ensures quality delivery in line with government standards.

Residents of the affected communities welcomed the intervention, describing it as timely and impactful.

They recalled years of unchecked erosion and heavy rainfall that resulted in significant losses and hardship, expressing optimism that the project would provide lasting relief.

The Commissioner also urged residents to support government efforts by ensuring proper use and maintenance of the infrastructure upon completion.

The erosion control initiative forms part of the broader environmental and infrastructural development agenda of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, aimed at improving living conditions and strengthening resilience against climate-related challenges across the state.

As part of the monitoring tour, Comrade Sumaila inspected 10 projects across Takai and Sumaila Local Government Areas.

The projects included Neighbourhood Security Watch Divisions, five-kilometre road projects, and the first and second phases of the Kwankwasiyya Gida-Gida Blocks of Classrooms initiative.
