A civic organisation in Sokoto State has called on Nigeria’s anti-corruption and security agencies to maintain strict neutrality in the investigation of former Governor and Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, warning against what it described as the politicisation of accountability processes.

The group, Sokoto Progressive Vanguards, appealed in a statement issued on Wednesday in Sokoto by its Chairman, Hon. Yusha’u Musa Alkanci.

Addressing the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), the Nigeria Police Force, and the Department of State Services (DSS), the group urged the agencies to resist any form of political influence in carrying out their statutory responsibilities.

The group expressed reservations over the report of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry reviewing the activities of the Tambuwal administration, alleging that the process appeared to be driven by political considerations rather than objective legal standards.

It emphasised that while public office holders must be accountable for their stewardship, investigations must strictly comply with due process, fairness, and constitutional provisions to safeguard the integrity of democratic institutions.

According to the statement, there were concerns in some quarters that the current administration in Sokoto State may be leveraging the commission’s findings to discredit the immediate past government, instead of focusing on governance priorities.

The group questioned the duration and operational framework of the Justice Mu’azu Pindiga led commission, noting that its sittings reportedly extended far beyond its initial timeline.

It argued that prolonged inquiries without clear procedural clarity could raise questions about transparency and intent.

The Sokoto Progressive Vanguards further maintained that any investigation into public expenditure or administrative conduct should adopt a holistic approach that reflects continuity in governance, rather than isolating a specific period.

It cautioned that limiting scrutiny to one administration without addressing pre-existing petitions or systemic issues could undermine public confidence in the fight against corruption.

The group also criticised what it described as premature public dissemination of allegations before the conclusion of formal processes, warning that such actions risk prejudicing outcomes and infringing on the principle of fair hearing.

While reiterating its support for credible anti-corruption efforts, the organisation stressed that accountability must not be perceived as a tool for political rivalry, noting that such perceptions could weaken public trust in national institutions.

Observers say the unfolding situation in Sokoto reflects a broader national conversation about the intersection of politics and anti-graft campaigns, particularly as Nigeria continues to strengthen its democratic and institutional frameworks.

The group ultimately called on all stakeholders government officials, political actors, and investigative agencies to prioritise justice, transparency, and national development above partisan interests, insisting that the credibility of Nigeria’s anti-corruption architecture must remain beyond reproach.
