Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has been honoured with the prestigious The Sun Newspaper Governor of the Year Award in recognition of his remarkable achievements in governance.
Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the governor’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Sunday that the award was presented by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu at a colourful ceremony held at Eko Hotels, Lagos, attended by top government officials and dignitaries from across the country.
The award was received on behalf of the Governor by Alhaji Abdulkareem A. Zaura (A.A. Zaura).
Governor Yusuf was honoured alongside two other governors from Zamfara and Cross River States.
Also recognized at the event was the Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, who received the award of Humanitarian Senator of the Year.
In his acceptance speech, A.A. Zaura described the award as a strong encouragement for Governor Yusuf to intensify efforts in delivering quality governance to the people of Kano State.
He said the honour came as no surprise, stressing that Governor Yusuf has emerged as one of the most celebrated governors in recent history due to his people-oriented policies and visible performance.
Zaura recalled that in 2025 alone, the Governor received five major education-related awards, including Teacher-Friendly Governor of the Year by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), as well as recognitions from Leadership, Blueprint, and New Telegraph newspapers.
He added that the Governor was also honoured as Labour-Friendly Governor of the Year and Pensioners-Friendly Governor of the Year for clearing over ₦27 billion backlog of pension and gratuity payments.
According to him, Governor Yusuf further made history as the first governor to implement the new ₦71,000 minimum wage, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
Members of the delegation included former Kano State Commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba; former Head of Service, Usman Bala; Special Adviser on Information, Ibrahim Adam; Director General, Asma’u Jibrila; and the Governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
Governor Yusuf dedicated the award to the good people of Kano State for their support, cooperation, and prayers.
He assured that his administration would remain committed to delivering more dividends of democracy and accelerating development across the state.
