Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has attended the 45th Convocation Ceremony of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
He announced a donation of N50 million for the establishment of the Technology Innovation Hub at the University through a partnership between Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala Foundation (NOI Foundation) and AMA Pharmaceticals limited in support of youth empowerment, education, leadership development, and socio-economic inclusion.
A statement signed by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, on Saturday, said the donation was announced during the convocation ceremony held at Mamman Kontagora Square, where former Minister of Finance and Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) degree in recognition of her outstanding contributions to national and global development, public service, and exemplary leadership.
Governor Yusuf described the donation as part of Kano State Government’s commitment to strategic partnerships with reputable institutions and foundations that promote human capital development and sustainable growth.
He said the gesture aligns with his administration’s people-centred agenda, which prioritises education, skills acquisition and the empowerment of young people and women.
According to the governor, the NOI Foundation has distinguished itself through impactful interventions in leadership training, mentorship, education support, and policy advocacy, particularly among underserved communities. He commended the effort of Musa Abdullahi Bello for taking the lead in the establishment of the Hub through AMA Pharmaceutical Limited.
Governor Yusuf also lauded the foundation’s partnership with AMA Pharmaceutical Company in establishing an innovative hub at Ahmadu Bello University, describing it as a groundbreaking initiative that will enhance research, innovation and entrepreneurship among students.
Kano State currently has about 6,000 indigent students studying at Ahmadu Bello University, noting that the donation will indirectly benefit many Kano youths through expanded educational and development programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmad, formally acknowledged the governor’s presence and praised him for his strong leadership and unwavering commitment to education in Northern Nigeria.
Similarly, the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, lauded Governor Yusuf’s contributions to the education sector in Kano State and his dedication to improving learning outcomes and academic excellence.
The convocation ceremony brought together academics, government officials, traditional rulers, development partners and students to celebrate scholarly achievements and the continued pursuit of educational excellence in Nigeria.
Governor Yusuf reaffirmed Kano State Government’s readiness to continue engaging with development partners, foundations and civil society organisations to advance inclusive development and improve the welfare of citizens.
