The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has arrested a 20-year-old man for attempting to smuggle illicit drugs to inmates during hearing at the Kano High Court premises.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Command, CSC Musbahu Lawan K/Nasarawa, the suspect, identified as Muhammad Kabir Tishama of Hotoro area in Kano, was apprehended by officers from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre while inmates were being escorted to court for their respective hearings.
The Command disclosed that the suspect concealed a substance suspected to be Indian hemp inside a loaf of bread, which he allegedly planned to hand over to an inmate during court proceedings on Wednesday.
“The Controller of Corrections, Kano State Command, Ado Inuwa, has ordered that the suspect be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for thorough investigation and possible prosecution. He further commended the officer-in-charge of Goron Dutse, ACC Kafilu Abdulahi, and the officers involved for their professionalism, alertness, and dedication in preventing the infiltration of illicit substances into custodial centres,” the statement partly read.
The Controller also urged members of the public, particularly parents and guardians, to caution their children and wards against engaging in criminal activities, while reiterating the Service’s mandate of reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating offenders into society.
The NCoS noted that the arrest comes shortly after it foiled a previous similar attempt to smuggle illicit substances into a custodial centre in the state.
