The National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Alhassan Yahaya, on Saturday commissioned the Kano State Online Media Chapel office, commending the NUJ Kano State Council for its innovative leadership, inclusive programs, and consistent efforts to unite and advance the union’s members.
Comrade Yahaya made the remarks during a dinner and award night marking the closing ceremony of the 2025 NUJ Press Week organised by the Kano State Council and held at the NUJ Press Centre in Kano.
He described the Kano Council as one of the councils he is “always proud of,” applauding leaders at all levels for their commitment, teamwork, and dedication to strengthening the union.
The NUJ President also expressed appreciation to Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his passion and substantial investment in the journalism profession, noting that the governor’s support has significantly enhanced media practice and professionalism in the state.
Urging journalists to embrace professionalism and responsibility ahead of 2026, Comrade Yahaya called on members to become strong ambassadors of the profession by setting the right agenda and protecting the image of journalism in Nigeria.
He further revealed that the NUJ national leadership is pursuing innovations, including improved remuneration for journalists working in federal media organizations.
According to him, discussions are ongoing with the Minister of Information, expressing optimism that once implemented at the federal level, the union would advocate for adoption across the 36 states.
Comrade Yahaya also announced plans to introduce a health insurance scheme for journalists, aimed at reducing out-of-pocket expenses, lowering maternal mortality, and supporting the drive toward universal health coverage.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, reaffirmed Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s commitment to journalists’ welfare and professional development.
He highlighted the reforms introduced by the ministry, including capacity-building programs, a state media information policy, the inclusion of online media practitioners, and the establishment of a veterans’ league to support retired journalists and mentor younger ones.
Earlier, the Chairman of the NUJ Kano State Council, Comrade Sulaiman Dederi, said the 2025 Press Week was designed to promote unity and engagement among members.
He noted that activities during the week included prayers, a novelty match, training sessions, and visits to sick members and families of deceased colleagues.
The event featured award presentations to the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya; former National President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Baba Halilu Dantiye; and the Director General, Media and Communications to the Kano State Governor, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. The program concluded with goodwill messages from veterans and well-wishers.
