The Resource Center for Human Rights and Civic Education (CHRICED) has called on President Tinubu to halt what it described as an unsustainable borrowing trajectory.

This call was made on Monday in a press briefing on the State of the Nation.

The briefing, which took place at Bon Hotel, Nassarawa GRA, Kano sought to confront the deepening crisis that threatens democracy in Nigeria.

While delivering his statement, Ibrahim Zikirulahi, the Executive Director of CHRICED stated that despite official claims of Naira stabilization and a drop in inflation to 18.02%, these macroeconomic indicators have brought little or no relief to the average Nigerian.

According to him, millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with deepening poverty, rising food prices, and economic despair.

“Rather than articulating and implementing a coherent, people-centred economic recovery plan, the Federal Government continues to borrow recklessly, both domestically and internationally.

“Even with claims of having met the 2025 Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) target, the borrowing spree continues unabated, compounding economic strain on citizens.

“CHRICED calls on President Tinubu to halt the unsustainable borrowing trajectory.

“The solution to our economic woes lies not in piling up debt, but in creating jobs, investing in local industries, and empowering our youth,” he stated.

Zikirullahi also highlighted the systemic healthcare crisis that affects the quality of care citizens receive.

He urged the government to address out-of-pocket spending for healthcare in the country.

In her remarks, Mrs Hannelore Henn-Sories, a representative from Miseror KZE Germany commended CHRICED for its commitment to deepening democracy in Nigeria.

According to her, Miseror’s support to CHRICED has showed that change is possible in the country, especially in the aspect of citizens seeking their fundamental human rights.

“At Miseror, Human dignity is a particular concern for us.

“We believe in driving change through partnership, and this has been done over the years in Nigeria through CHRICED.

“They have been advancing human rights and civic empowerment in the country, and it is backed by visible results.

“On behalf of Miseror, we appreciate the good work that CHRICED is doing in Nigeria,” Mrs Henn-Sories said.
