The spokesman of the Sokoto Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) Mr. Dele Oyewale has confirmed the arrest of suspected internet fraudsters after a night raid at a suspected hideout in Kwalkwalawa village.
According to Oyewale, the suspected internet fraudsters were arrested after an intelligence gathering regarding the unlawful activities of the group.
The coordinated operation was targeted at Yahoo boys who engaged in cybercrime activities in the state.
He said the arrest happened on Saturday in the Gidan Yaro, Dandima, and Kwalkwalawa areas of Sokoto of the state Metropolis following reliable information on the group’s involvement in cyber-related crime.
“Our officers swooped on the suspected criminals who were alleged to be part of a syndicate engaging in internet fraud, nicknamed “Yahoo ” Yahoo”
Oyewale also confirmed to our correspondent that those arrested were students of Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto (UDUS), and were with alleged incriminating gadgets used in their wanton activities.
He said items recovered from the suspects during the raid include laptops, iPhones, and other devices used for internet scams.
“Investigations suggest that the suspects were involved in different forms of online fraud, targeting individuals and corporate organizations locally and overseas.
The commission remains resolute and committed to clamping down on cyber criminals to protect the country’s image in the eyes of the world.
The suspects who were all students, have chosen to corrupt their minds and technical know-how to defraud their innocent victims,”
“The arrest underscores EFCC’s efforts to make Nigeria free of internet fraudsters, “We will intensify our operations until we flush out fraudsters in our higher institutions where the menace appears to be trending.
“EFCC will continue to monitor, arrest, and prosecute suspected criminals in its war against cybercrime and financial offenses.”
