Ethiopia has been chosen to host the 2027 United Nations Climate Change Conference, edging out Nigeria in the bid.

The East African nation recently hosted this year’s Africa Climate Summit in September, known as the “Africa COP,” which focused on Africa’s role in promoting climate justice and solutions.

African countries, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, are among the hardest hit by climate change and have long called on developed nations to increase support for adaptation and mitigation efforts.

This year’s COP30 opened Monday in Belem, Brazil, urging world leaders and delegates to tackle rising global temperatures, strengthen emissions reductions, and promote an inclusive and equitable transition.

The host for COP31 in 2026 is still undecided, with Australia and Turkey both in contention.
