The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Dr. Tony Ojukwu, has commended Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for his administration’s unwavering commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights in the state.

Dr. Ojukwu gave the commendation during a courtesy visit to the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, in Kano on Thursday.

He said the visit aimed to strengthen institutional collaboration between the NHRC and the Kano State Government in advancing human rights and social justice.

According to him, the Commission is exploring key areas of partnership, including strengthening operational synergy between the NHRC’s Kano Office and relevant state institutions, promoting human rights education and awareness among public officers, traditional and religious leaders, and the general public, as well as ensuring compliance with human rights standards within the state’s justice and security sectors.

He added that the Commission is particularly interested in initiatives that prevent and address human rights violations affecting women, children, persons with disabilities, and detainees.

Dr. Ojukwu further noted that the NHRC hopes to collaborate with the Kano Government on peacebuilding, social inclusion, and community engagement programs to foster tolerance and mutual respect.

In his response, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Comrade Waiya, reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s readiness to deepen collaboration with the NHRC to strengthen the protection of citizens’ rights.

He explained that under Governor Yusuf’s leadership, significant reforms have been introduced to ensure fairness and professionalism within the state’s justice system.

“Police prosecutors are being gradually phased out and replaced with qualified lawyers to enhance due process and accountability,” he stated.

Waiya also highlighted the government’s efforts to strengthen the Kano State Hisbah Board to handle matters related to social justice and human rights with greater professionalism and compassion.

He said the Board has recorded remarkable achievements in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups and promoting social harmony.

The Commissioner thanked the NHRC for its continuous engagement and reaffirmed the Kano State Government’s commitment to upholding human dignity, equity, and justice for all residents.
