The National Assembly has introduced new security measures limiting movement around the office of Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
The directive was contained in a memo dated October 2 and signed by the Assembly’s sergeant-at-arms, Etido Ekpo, which reserves the corridor linking the White House lobby to the Senate President’s office strictly for senators and members of the House of Representatives.
According to Ekpo, aides and personal assistants will no longer be allowed to use the passage.
“You are kindly requested to disseminate this information to distinguished senators, who would in turn intimate their aides or personal assistants as appropriate,” the memo stated.
Ekpo, a retired brigadier-general, explained that the restrictions are intended to guarantee a “secure and safe environment” for legislative activities.
Plenary sessions are expected to resume on October 7 after a recess of more than two months.
