The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised alarm over the low number of media organizations applying for accreditation to cover the upcoming bye-elections scheduled for Saturday, 16 August 2025.

In a statement issued by Mrs. Victoria Eta-Messi, Director of Voter Education and Publicity, the Commission disclosed that only 12 media organizations, comprising just 91 personnel, have submitted applications since the accreditation portal opened on Tuesday, 8 July.

“As of 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, July 23, only 12 applications have been received. This is much lower than expected,” she stated.

INEC is calling on print, broadcast, and online media organizations to take advantage of the accreditation window before it closes at midnight on Thursday, July 31, 2025.

The Commission emphasized that late applications will not be considered.

Eta-Messi highlighted the vital role of the media in ensuring electoral transparency and strengthening public trust in the democratic process, urging journalists to report fairly, professionally, and responsibly.

“Together, we can help build trust in the electoral process through responsible and timely reporting,” she added.
