To strengthen agricultural productivity and enhance food security, Dala Local Government Council has commenced the sale of 1,800 bags of fertilizer to farmers at a subsidized rate of N20,000 per bag.
Flagging off the exercise, the Chairman of the Council, Surajo Ibrahim Imam, said the initiative targets both subsistence and large-scale farmers, as well as registered farmers’ associations across the 12 political wards of the area.
He disclosed that each ward will receive 100 bags for distribution to genuinely needy farmers under strict supervision.
To ensure transparency and fairness, Surajo revealed that monitoring committees had been established in each ward.
The committees comprise ward leadership, elected councillors, Option A Committee members, heads of farmers’ associations, CRC representatives, Kano Proper Lafiya Jari members, and community leaders (Mai Unguwa).
He explained that interested farmers are required to pay the stipulated amount directly into the council’s account at TAJ Bank and present their payment slips at the council’s Agricultural Department for collection.
“No credit, no guarantees, no reservations, noting that the distribution would be strictly on a first-come, first-served basis in each ward.”
Surajo reiterated the vital role of agriculture as the backbone of society and a key driver of development.
He also used the occasion to offer prayers for the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, asking Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest.
Speaking during the event, Head of the Council’s Agricultural Department, Malam Sani Nano Kunya, congratulated the farmers, describing the intervention as timely and crucial for boosting yields.
He prayed for abundant harvests across the farming communities.
Similarly, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) Chairman in Dala, Dayyabu Ahmad Maiturare, lauded the council’s efforts in making fertilizer affordable and accessible, saying it would help stabilize food prices.
He urged supervisors to remain honest and transparent in executing their duties, in line with the directives of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who is committed to ensuring statewide food security.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Malam Abdullahi Mohammad expressed appreciation to the council, saying the intervention would significantly enhance agricultural output, given Dala’s status as the largest farming locality among Kano’s 44 local government areas.
