The Sokoto State Police Command has apprehended two young men involved in an attempted kidnapping, criminal conspiracy, and anonymous communication in the Gidan Dare area of Sokoto metropolis.

The arrest followed a distress report lodged by one Muhammad Jibril on May 9, 2025.

According to the Police, Jibril informed the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that he had received a series of threatening phone calls from an unidentified number.

The caller demanded a ransom of ₦50,000,000 (Fifty Million Naira), warning that failure to pay would result in his abduction.

Acting swiftly on the report, detectives launched a comprehensive investigation, tracking the origin of the threatening calls. The painstaking effort led to the arrest of two suspects, 19-year-old Ibrahim Abdulrahim and 20-year-old Abdulmajid Sidi.

According to reports, both suspects reside in the same Gidan Dare neighborhood as the complainant. Disturbingly, they are not only his neighbors but were also familiar community members.

Prior to involving the Police, the victim had initially approached the father of the suspects, seeking a peaceful resolution.

The father promised to intervene and urged Mr. Jibril to remain calm, assuring him that the matter would be handled discreetly within the community.

However, despite being made aware that their father had been informed of the situation, the suspects continued with their criminal plot, demonstrating a bold and defiant disregard for both community mediation and the law.

Upon their arrest, the suspects reportedly confessed to the crime during police interrogation. Investigations are still ongoing to determine whether others were involved in the plot or if the act was isolated.

The Sokoto State Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, psc, praised the prompt response and diligence of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

He emphasized that such success is a testament to the effectiveness of community-based policing and intelligence-driven operations.

CP Musa further called on residents to remain vigilant and proactive in reporting suspicious behavior in their surroundings.

He stressed that community cooperation is vital in curbing the rising tide of youth-related crimes in urban areas.

The Commissioner of Police urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to the activities and kind of friends their children keep, noting that early intervention can prevent criminal tendencies from escalating.

As the investigation proceeds, the suspects are expected to be charged to court upon its conclusion, where they will face justice for their actions.

The Police command also released emergency contact numbers for residents to report criminal or suspicious activities: 0803 234 5167 and 0706 884 8035.

The Sokoto Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, urging all citizens to support security agencies in their mission to maintain law and order.
