NEMA, Kano Provides Relief to Windstorm Affected Communities

Lukman

The Kano State Government, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), distributed relief items on Saturday to 553 households affected by a recent windstorm.

Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf, represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Amina Abdullahi, supervised the distribution in Minjibir and Gabasawa Local Government Areas. The governor expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its support.

“We conducted many stakeholders’ meetings, awareness campaigns, and sensitization efforts to prevent flooding in the state,” he said. He also called on residents to avoid dumping waste in waterways and to maintain a clean environment to mitigate the risk of floods.

NEMA’s Director-General, Hajiya Zubaida Umar, emphasized that the relief effort was part of the federal government’s intervention to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the windstorm.

Represented by NEMA’s Kano Territorial Coordinator, Dr. Nuraddeen Abdullahi, Umar noted, “While these items cannot fully compensate for the damage and losses you have suffered, they are a small gesture to show that the federal government stands with you in your time of need.”

The relief items, provided in response to the windstorm that struck on May 29, 2024, included 1,450 bags of 25kg rice, 1,450 bags of 25kg maize, 100 cartons of vegetable oil, 100 cartons of seasoning, and 100 bags of iodized salt. Additional supplies included 1,450 blankets, mats, and nets.

Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Executive Secretary, Isyaku Abdullahi-Kubarachi, urged recipients to use the items for the benefit of their households.

A beneficiary, Laure Yahaya, expressed her gratitude, noting that the assistance would help alleviate the hardship caused by the disaster.
