The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the death of one Ibrahim Tijani ‘M’, aged 45 years, and the disappearance of another following a wild elephant attack in Innayin Community on Thursday.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. when the animal reportedly invaded the community, causing panic among residents.
Police operatives, working in collaboration with local vigilantes and hunters, responded swiftly after receiving a distress call.
Upon arrival at the scene, they discovered the lifeless body of 45-year-old Ibrahim Tijani in a nearby bush. Authorities said the victim sustained injuries consistent with an animal attack.
His remains have since been evacuated to the General Hospital, Iwere-Ile, for examination and preservation.
During ongoing search operations, another resident, identified as 50-year-old Muhammadu Bingin, was declared missing after reportedly encountering the same elephant.
Efforts are currently underway to locate him.
The Police Command reassured residents of Innayin and surrounding communities that the situation is under control, noting that measures have been put in place to prevent further casualties.
Residents have been advised to steer clear of the affected area and promptly report any sighting of the animal to security agencies.
Authorities also emphasized the need to handle the situation in line with wildlife conservation laws. Relevant agencies, including the National Park Service Nigeria, are being engaged to provide expert guidance on safely managing the threat.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, urged calm among residents, assuring that security personnel are on the ground to contain the situation.
“We understand the concerns this incident has generated within the community. Our officers are fully on ground working with relevant stakeholders to secure the area and prevent further casualties.
We appeal to residents to remain calm, avoid the affected locations, and cooperate with the police as we work to bring the situation under control,” he said.
The Command appreciated the cooperation of community members and called for continued collaboration with security agencies to ensure public safety. Emergency contact lines have also been provided for residents requiring immediate assistance.
