The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday chaired a meeting of the FCT Executive Committee, where far-reaching decisions were taken to reform waste management across the territory.

Briefing journalists after the meeting, the Coordinator of the Abuja Municipal Management Council (AMMC), Chief Felix Amechi Obuah, announced that a revamped waste management system will take off on Monday, November 17, 2025. He said the initiative is designed to address widespread complaints about poor waste disposal and to ensure a cleaner and better-organized Abuja.

According to Obuah, the Committee approved a memo introducing new waste collection contractors for the FCT, alongside the procurement of basic waste treatment plants and supervisory utility vehicles to enhance efficiency.

“We have received numerous complaints about poor waste disposal. This new regime will correct those lapses and give residents a cleaner Abuja,” he said.

Similarly, the Satellite Towns Development Department (STDD), led by Hon. Abdulkadir Zulkiflu, disclosed that the Committee ratified the payment of ₦111.9 million for the emergency evacuation of waste from open dumps, waterways, and streams in Dogon Gada, a community in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC).

In his remarks, the FCT Secretary of Transportation, Hon. Chinedum Elechi, said the Committee also approved printing services for the Directorate of Road Transport Services (DRTS), as well as the maintenance of 34 traffic lights and the installation of three new ones within the city.

Earlier, the Chief of Staff to the FCT Minister, Hon. Chidi Amadi, reaffirmed Wike’s commitment to improving environmental sanitation and transforming Abuja into a world-class capital.

“The Minister is very particular about waste management because it directly affects the cleanliness and image of the city,” Amadi noted.

The new waste management policy is expected to boost sanitation enforcement, enhance waste collection processes, and improve the overall environmental outlook of the Federal Capital Territory.
