Wasiu Ayinde has apologized over the Abuja airport incident.
In a statement personally signed and released on Friday, the singer said the flask seen in his possession on August 5 contained water, not alcohol, and attributed the misunderstanding to a medical condition that requires him to stay hydrated.
“Unknown to many, I suffer from chronic dehydration, and my doctor strongly advised that I remain constantly hydrated. This is why I always carry a water flask with me,” he said.
Ayinde The apology comes days after media reports suggested that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority had taken disciplinary action against the artist over alleged misconduct at the airport.
Ayinde said CCTV footage from the airport could support his account and reaffirmed his respect for aviation regulations.
“My unwavering patriotism and loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria have never been in doubt. I would never do anything to tarnish the image I’ve built,” he said.
The musician, who has been active in the entertainment industry for over 50 years, also thanked his fans for their continued support and stated his continued commitment to promoting Nigerian culture.
stated that the flask was empty at the time of two security checks and was only filled with water at the airport lounge shortly before boarding. He added that he had not entered the aircraft and therefore could not have been deboarded, contrary to reports.
“I acknowledge and deeply regret the concerns that arose from the incident. It was never my intention to cause any disruption or violate aviation protocols,” the statement read.
He apologised to the Presidency, the Ministry of Aviation, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), airline operator ValueJet, and Nigerians.
