The Nigerian Army has reinforced its nationwide offensive against banditry and violent crime, recording major operational breakthroughs in the North West as the 8 Division and Sector 2 Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, reviewed a year of intensive security operations during the 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) in Sokoto.

The event, held on Tuesday at the Giginya Cantonment, brought together military leaders, government officials and communities, marking the end of the training year while highlighting the Army’s expanding role in stabilising some of Nigeria’s most security-challenged regions.

Beyond its cultural significance, the WASA served as a national scorecard on the Federal Government’s counter-banditry campaign, with Operation FANSAN YAMMA emerging as a critical pillar in restoring security across Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina and adjoining states.

Representing Sokoto State Governor, Dr Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, the Special Adviser on Security, Colonel Ahmed Abdu (rtd), praised the Army’s “extraordinary courage and professionalism,” describing its operations as vital to protecting lives and sustaining economic recovery in the region.

He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to continued collaboration with the Armed Forces and other security agencies, stressing that peace and development remain inseparable national priorities.

In his address, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander Sector 2 Joint Task Force, Major General Ibikunle Ademola Ajose, outlined the scale of successes recorded by troops over the past year.

He disclosed that Army formations rescued 1,023 kidnapped victims alive, dealt decisive blows to bandit networks, and recovered 189 AK-47 rifles, over 4,300 rounds of ammunition, 305 motorcycles, and more than 4,000 rustled livestock, while neutralising several notorious bandit leaders.

According to him, these gains are already transforming daily life, with farming activities resuming, markets reopening, and major highways witnessing renewed commercial traffic after prolonged insecurity.

“The campaign against banditry and terrorism is steadily yielding results,” Major General Ajose said, attributing the progress to frontline troop resilience, improved intelligence sharing, and strategic leadership at Army Headquarters.

He also highlighted ongoing investments in troop welfare, including better medical facilities, accommodation and logistics, noting that well supported personnel remain key to sustaining operational momentum.

The WASA celebration showcased Nigeria’s cultural diversity and military unity, featuring traditional dances, cuisines and friendly competitions that underscored the importance of strong civil military relations.

As the training year ended, the 8 Division reaffirmed its resolve to intensify operations, aligning with the Nigerian Army’s national mandate to defend territorial integrity, protect citizens and secure lasting peace across the country.
