Paris St-Germain opened their Ligue 1 campaign with a narrow 1-0 victory at Nantes, secured by a second-half strike from Vitinha.

The Portuguese midfielder’s 67th-minute effort took a heavy deflection off defender Chidozie Awaziem, wrong-footing goalkeeper Anthony Lopes to give the champions the breakthrough.

Luis Enrique’s side, fresh from their Super Cup triumph over Tottenham on Wednesday, looked sluggish for long spells despite coming off a dominant league season where they finished 19 points clear at the top.

The PSG boss made seven changes from the midweek clash in Udine.

New £57m signing Illia Zabarnyi made his debut in defence, while Ousmane Dembele, Desire Doue, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia started on the bench.

Gonçalo Ramos later had a second goal ruled out by VAR for offside.

The win marks the start of PSG’s bid for a fifth consecutive league crown.

They return to action at the Parc des Princes on Friday against Angers, who opened their season with a 1-0 victory over Paris FC.
