UNICEF Trains Ward Development Committees to Tackle Community Challenges in Sokoto

Editor

Musa Na Allah, Sokoto

Members of Ward Development Committees (WDCs) across the 23 local government areas of Sokoto State have been urged to enhance their roles in addressing critical community issues.

Dr. Rashidat Olabisi Babalola, a resource person at a three-day training organized by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), made the call while monitoring the sessions.

She emphasized the importance of teamwork and the need for WDC members to identify and address key challenges in their communities, particularly in the areas of healthcare, education, nutrition, water sanitation, hygiene, and child protection.

Dr. Babalola stressed that such efforts could significantly improve local conditions by reducing the number of out-of-school children, lowering infant and maternal mortality rates, curbing open defecation, and increasing antenatal care and immunization uptake, among other vital interventions.

According to Dr. Babalola, the training aimed to empower and strengthen the capacity of WDC members, enabling them to engage meaningfully with their communities, identify the root causes of local problems, and plan effective solutions.

In his remarks, Comrade Bala Gadanga, Chairman of the State Ward Development Committee, praised UNICEF and the relevant MDAs for their foresight.

He assured that the knowledge gained would be applied to benefit the communities, particularly women and children.

Similarly, participant Hajiya Fatima Larai Tahir expressed her gratitude to UNICEF for ensuring the active involvement of women in the initiative.
