UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador Visits Mbera Refugee Camp Ahead Of COP29

Stallion Times

Thousands of Malian refugees live in Mbera, in southeast Mauritania. According to estimates from the UN refugee agency, Mauritania is home to about 262,000 refugees, the majority of whom are Mali women and children.

UNHCR is traveling to the upcoming UN climate conference to represent both the hosts and the displaced people.

Theo James, a UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, recently traveled to Mauritania.

“They were compelled to cross the border due to conflict in Mali. They are coming to a location where resources are already scarce due to the climate catastrophe. Thus, a precarious position has been made even worse, “said the actor, who gained notoriety for his role in the adolescent drama Divergent.

“Refugees must be included in climate policy on the world stage,” he stated.

The ambassador of UNHCR Goodwill met refugees, many of whom are leading community projects.

James, whose grandpa was a refugee, will attend the COP29 conference in Azerbaijan on behalf of the UN Refugee Agency.

In November, Baku, Azerbaijan, will host COP29.
