The United Nations has strongly condemned the latest wave of violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s troubled Ituri Province, where armed groups—most notably the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF)—have carried out deadly attacks against civilians.

Speaking on Thursday, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq expressed deep concern over the deteriorating security situation, noting that at least 82 civilians have been killed in recent weeks across Ituri and neighboring North Kivu.

Haq said the UN peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, is working alongside Congolese authorities and local communities to defuse tensions, protect civilians, and promote long-term stability.

He specifically condemned the attacks in Djugu Territory and emphasized the urgent need for inclusive dialogue to prevent further bloodshed.

However, the UN’s response efforts have been significantly undermined by ongoing funding challenges.

The organization is grappling with financial constraints made worse by the withdrawal of substantial U.S. contributions to peacekeeping operations during the Trump administration.

As one of the UN’s former top donors, the U.S. funding cuts have left missions like MONUSCO struggling to operate effectively.

Humanitarian operations in the region are also facing severe limitations.

Aid agencies report growing difficulties in reaching vulnerable populations due to insecurity and a lack of resources.

Analysts warn that unless the international community steps up its support, violence in eastern DRC could escalate further, putting even more civilians at risk.

The UN has renewed its appeal for global solidarity and increased funding to address the worsening humanitarian and security crisis, stressing that peace in the region remains elusive without sustained international commitment.
