Ugandan police on Thursday, November 27, used water cannon and tear gas to disperse supporters of opposition presidential candidate Bobi Wine during a campaign stop in Kayunga, about 75 kilometres from Kampala.
Crowds had lined the roads to welcome the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate when security forces intervened.
In footage shared by local media, Bobi Wine—standing atop a vehicle—confronted officers, accusing them of illegally blocking his campaign.
“I am a presidential candidate and I am supposed to be talking to the people. Why do you shoot bullets at the audience?” he asked.
Ugandans head to the polls in January to elect the president, parliament, and local government officials.
Incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has ruled since 1986, has been cleared by the electoral commission to seek another term.
Bobi Wine, born Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, has galvanized young voters nationwide, leveraging his background as a popular musician to build a movement pushing for political change.
