A train derailment in Egypt’s Matrouh Governorate has left three people dead and 103 others injured, the Ministry of Health confirmed.
The accident occurred on August 30 when seven carriages of Train No. 1935, traveling from Marsa Matrouh to Alexandria, went off the tracks between Fouka and Galal stations due to suspected track subsidence. Two carriages overturned during the crash, which happened at about 3:30 p.m. in a desert area.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with more than 50 ambulances deployed. By evening, 87 of the injured had been treated and discharged from hospitals, while others remain under care.
Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir, who visited the site, announced the creation of a technical committee to investigate the cause, vowing that any officials found culpable would be dismissed.
The tragedy has reignited concerns over railway safety in Egypt, where 220 train accidents were recorded in 2024, claiming 57 lives.
