No fewer than 70 houses have collapsed and dozens more severely damaged after hours of torrential rainfall submerged several communities in Malam Madori Local Government Area of Jigawa State on Saturday.
The worst-hit areas include Tonikutara, Gandun Sarki, Gandun Bundugoma, and Shagari Quarters, where floodwaters overwhelmed waterways and culverts, leaving many homes surrounded by water.
Residents described the downpour, which began late Saturday and lasted until Sunday morning, as one of the heaviest in recent years. Many families were forced to abandon their homes and seek refuge with relatives.
Dan-Ummah Abba, a resident of Gandun Sarki, said his house was among more than 30 destroyed, appealing to the Jigawa State Government for urgent support.
Similarly, Bulama Jamilu, a traditional leader in the area, confirmed that many displaced victims are currently sheltering in relatives’ homes.
The Chairman of Malam Madori Local Government, Salisu Sani Garun-Gabas, sympathized with the victims and pledged substantial support.
He has directed the local emergency management committee to assess the damage in the affected communities.
Amina Haruna Dokajo, Vice Chairman of the committee, disclosed that the lawmaker representing Malam Madori, Hamza Adamu Babayaro, had donated tippers of soil and other relief items to assist victims.
She added that a water pump engine would be installed in Gandun Sarki to channel floodwaters into the countryside.
A delegation from the Jigawa State Government, led by the Senior Special Adviser on Flood, Hamza Muhammad Hadejia, also visited the affected communities and promised urgent action to prevent a recurrence.
