President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday called on young Nigerians in the digital media space to channel their platforms towards promoting national development and unity.

Speaking at the opening of the Progressives Digital Media Summit themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” President Tinubu urged digital media practitioners to build job-creating enterprises, produce content that promotes shared values, and become agents of positive social change.

“Young Nigerians are embracing this digital moment—innovating, educating, and demanding accountability.

“But with growing influence comes greater responsibility. I urge you to use your platforms to foster progress, unity, and empowerment,” he said.

He stressed the need for content creators to verify information before dissemination, warning against the dangers of misinformation.

President Tinubu described digital media as no longer a luxury or accessory but a core driver of economic, civic, and social transformation.

“You are no longer waiting for the future; you are building it.

“From launching tech platforms to creating thriving digital communities, your resilience and creativity are reshaping Nigeria’s potential,” he said.

The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting digital innovation through initiatives like the National Digital Innovation Fund and startup-friendly policies.

However, he cautioned against cyber threats, disinformation, and content that undermines social harmony.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, praised digital media players for consistently portraying Nigeria in a positive light.

“You are the vanguard of a new Nigeria.

“Under President Tinubu’s leadership, our journey to national greatness has begun, though the path may be tough,” he said.

In a goodwill message, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stressed the growing influence of digital media in political outcomes globally.

Citing recent elections in countries like the U.S. and Germany, he warned that social media platforms have become chaotic battlegrounds filled with deepfakes, disinformation, and divisive content.

“Misinformation travels faster than corrections,” Onanuga noted. “We must now develop strategies to counter these threats.”

Summit convener and Special Assistant to the President on New Media, Segun Dada, described digital media as a powerful engine for communication, innovation, and influence.

He urged young Nigerians to use it responsibly and ethically to advance the national interest while being mindful of privacy and cohesion concerns.
