The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has issued a fresh warning against building or carrying out activities under high-voltage transmission lines, following a thunderstorm incident that sparked a fire along the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven line.

According to the company, the storm on September 3, 2025, caused a conductor near Tower 97 to snap and fall.

The live wire ignited a house directly beneath the line, destroyed a parked car, and killed two cows. No human casualties were recorded.

TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, said power supply to Nsukka was not disrupted, as bulk electricity was temporarily rerouted through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

Following the incident, TCN’s Enugu regional manager, Engr. Tom Inugonum, led an on-site inspection, while the Quick Response Line Maintenance Team commenced dismantling of the damaged section to enable repairs.

Mbah stressed that the event highlights the dangers of encroaching on the transmission right-of-way (RoW).

“Building, parking, or engaging in activities under transmission lines poses serious risks to lives and property. We urge the public to respect safety guidelines around power infrastructure,” she said.

The company reiterated its commitment to grid stability and public safety, noting that while the Nsukka axis remains on supply via alternative routes, full restoration of the damaged line is underway.
