Authorities in Somaliland have rescued ten cheetah cubs that were being held in captivity and prepared for sale on the international illegal wildlife market.

The cubs, discovered in Sallahley District in mid-August, were severely malnourished and in poor condition after months of confinement. They are now receiving care from the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF).

CCF founder Laurie Marker said one of the cubs, about five months old, suffered from sores, maggot infestations, and starvation. She explained that their recovery required gradual feeding to prevent re-feeding syndrome, a condition common in those recovering from prolonged malnutrition.

Two suspects were arrested during the rescue operation, according to Somaliland’s Environment Ministry Director, Abdinasir Hussein Said. He noted that the cubs have joined 109 others previously saved from traffickers.

Somaliland has become a key transit hub for traffickers moving cheetahs and leopards from the Horn of Africa to Gulf countries, where demand for exotic pets continues to rise. Conservationists warn that this trade not only threatens species survival but also disrupts fragile ecosystems.

“Wildlife belongs in their natural habitats, not in captivity,” Hussein said, urging locals to protect endangered species.

Possession of wild animals is illegal in Somaliland, and authorities have stepped up crackdowns on traffickers fueling the trade.
