Musa Na Allah Sokoto
The 38 Megawatt Independent Power Project (IPP) in Sokoto, which was previously abandoned, is now on track for completion within the next six months.
Work has resumed at the project site, and the state government is optimistic that the plant will soon begin generating power.
Sanusi Ibrahim Umar, the State Commissioner for Energy, expressed satisfaction with the progress thus far. The Sokoto State Government has invested approximately N32 billion into this critical project, which is expected to be one of the state’s key assets.
Governor Ahmed Aliyu has played a central role in advancing initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Sokoto residents and boosting the state’s economy. He awarded the contract to rehabilitate and complete the IPP, a project that was originally started by former Governor Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko.
Despite challenges such as vandalism and theft, the contractor has worked diligently to ensure timely completion. The commissioner assured that the Ministry of Energy will closely monitor the project’s progress to ensure it stays on schedule.
Once completed, the IPP is expected to generate at least 38 megawatts of power, contributing an additional 40 to 50 megawatts to the national grid. This increase in energy supply is expected to attract more investments, support cottage industries, and benefit the state’s economy.
Mr. Theo Ubani, the project’s coordinating consultant, spoke to journalists at the site, highlighting that with the 38MW generation capacity, Sokoto will be able to supply neighboring states, Kebbi and Zamfara, with power.
The project is currently 90% complete and will undergo a test run once the vandalized armored cables are restored. “We are on track to successfully deliver the project to the Sokoto State Government within the next six months, on the scheduled date,” Mr. Ubani stated.
He also emphasized that all the necessary infrastructure, including the supply channels for connection to the national grid, has been completed. “What remains is the final connectivity to the TCN substation in the state.
“The project has the capacity to meet the power demands of all manufacturing firms and industries in the state,” the consultant added. He also commended Governor Ahmed for his vision to make Sokoto self-sufficient in power supply.
