Sokoto Purchases N1.7b Relief Materials for Flood Victims – SEMA

Sokoto State Government has purchased assorted relief materials for distribution to flood victims worth over N1.7 billion.

 Executive Secretary Sokoto State Emergency Management (SEMA), Bashir Muhammad disclosed on Tuesday while updating newsmen on SEMA activities in Sokoto.

While giving updates on the plausible efforts by the state government to provide immediate succour to the flood victims in 22 local government areas affected by the disaster, he said SEMA would screen victims with a view to ascertain their losses.

“It is only Sokoto North Local Government that has not been affected by the devastating flood that occurred in the state in the past few weeks”.

The assorted foodstuffs included rice, maize, garri, and Millet; others were wrappers, brocade, mattresses, cement, ceiling boards, roofing sheets, blankets, and plastic wares.

He further stated that the relief materials include 20 motorized boats and 1,000 life jackets to be distributed to some riverine communities of the state.

“The flood disaster has affected 68,000 households across the state, with 31,000 houses destroyed.”

He said no fewer than 37,880 farmalands were destroyed by the flood disaster, resulting in colossal losses of assorted farm produce with more than 280 casualties recorded as a result of the devastating flood disaster, with some deaths.

Similarly, the ES said SEMA has set up three IDP camps in Tambuwal, Shagari, Gada, and Tureta LGAs.

The camps were aimed to provide the direly needed temporary accommodation to the displaced victims.

In Tambuwal LGA, the camps were established in Romon-Sarki and Sanyinna town while in Tureta LGA, the camps were set up in Tsamiya and Lofa. In Illela LGA, the camps are domiciled in Illela town and Amarawa.

“The camp in Gada was set up in Darna Tsolawo.”

The Executive Secretary however disclosed that the State Executive Council has approved the immediate commencement of the distribution exercise to all victims across the state.

While commending the Governor for giving top priority to the activities of the Agency, he promised not to fail the state in that direction.

“SEMA will soon swing into action to commence equitable distribution of the relief materials   verified victims to alleviate their suffering,”
