Sokoto Approves Funds for IPP Completion, Other Projects

Sokoto State Executive Council has, in its 9th sitting, approved 950 million naira for immediate completion of the state Capital Independent power project IPP as payment to the contractor handling the project. The project is expected to provide 35 megawatts of electricity to the state after completion.

The state IPP project, which started in the former administration of Senator Aliyu Wamakko over 15 years ago, is still in the construction stage.

The state commissioner for information and societal re-orientation Hon. Sambo Bello Danchadi while briefing journalists at the council chamber shortly after the meeting on Wednesday said, the approved funds were paid to the initial contractor handling the IPP project currently at the completion stage.

According to him, the Power Project when completed would provide 35 megawatts of electricity to the state.

The meeting also approved the sum of N279 million for the construction of six additional blocks of hostels at Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto and three more additional blocks of hostels at Umaru Ali Shinkafi Polytechnic Sokoto, each costing 192 million naira, all the state metropolis.

The state Waziri Junaidu History and Culture Bureau complex was also approved for rehabilitation at a cost of 222 million Naira by the council in session.

The council further approved the purchase of 2 additional vehicles to supplement the fleets of the office of the state Deputy Governor in Abuja and 2 additional vehicles for security agents operating in the state.

The state Medium Term Expenditure framework was also approved by the council for the period of three years, between 2025 to 2027 which will be forwarded to the state House of Assembly ramification.

He also said the council approved the sum of 203 million naira for the repairs of broken-down borehole pumping machines and water reticulation chemicals to boost supply to the residents of the state capital.

The state Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Barrister Nasiru Aliyu Dantsoho in his briefing to newsmen at the council chamber said, the connecting road network at the Sultan Maccido Institute for Qur’anic and General Studies was awarded at the cost of N1.4bn in addition to other roads in the state capital that include Zurmi, Kalambaina – Bodinga road roundabouts and Gobir -Argungu road at the cost of 2.46bn and N1.075bn naira respectively.

“The 3 roundabouts along Kara road market, Agaie road Junction, Sama road off Kaduna road will separately gulp N475m, 678m, and N689m”, as mentioned by the commissioner.

The council also at its Wednesday meeting approved for rehabilitation of 6 congregational Jumu’at Mosques and Islamiyya schools, in Sokoto, Shagari, and Kebbe the headquarters of the Kebbe local government area.
