The Nigerian Senate has postponed its resumption from annual recess, shifting the date from September 23 to October 7, 2025.
The adjustment was communicated in an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the Senate President, and shared with journalists on Monday, September 22.
Titled “Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date,” the memo informed senators of the new schedule and offered apologies for the late notice.
“This is to respectfully inform Distinguished Senators that the resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025.
“Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted,” it read.
Though no official reason was stated, sources disclosed that the shift would allow lawmakers to participate in Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations on October 1.
The Senate had earlier adjourned on July 24 for its annual recess, which Senate President Godswill Akpabio described as an act of “chamber reciprocity” with the House of Representatives.
With the new extension, key legislative activities—including motions, debates, oversight inquiries into government spending, and confirmation of executive appointments—will now be on hold until October.
