Professor Mahmood Yakubu has officially handed over to May Agbamuche as the Acting National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Agbamuche, the oldest serving National Commissioner in the electoral body, assumes the position following the completion of Professor Yakubu’s two-term, ten-year tenure as INEC Chairman.

The handover took place on Tuesday during an ongoing meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners at the INEC headquarters in Abuja. Professor Yakubu urged commissioners and directors of the commission to extend their full support to Agbamuche pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.

Yakubu, who was first appointed in November 2015 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, made history as the first person to serve two consecutive terms as INEC Chairman after his reappointment in 2020.

Under his leadership, INEC conducted several major elections, including the 2019 and 2023 general elections. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to announce Yakubu’s successor soon, subject to Senate confirmation.
