The Nigeria Police Force has announced plans to resume enforcement of the Tinted Glass Permit policy from 2 January 2026, citing rising security concerns and the need to protect lives and property across the country.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the Police explained that the decision followed a careful review of emerging crime trends linked to the misuse of vehicles fitted with unauthorized tinted glass.

The Force clarified that at no time did any court restrain it from enforcing existing laws regulating the use of tinted glass on vehicles.

However, enforcement was earlier suspended in the interest of transparency, public convenience, and responsibility, to allow motorists sufficient time to regularize their documentation and complete the registration process without undue pressure.

According to the statement, recent developments have shown a disturbing increase in criminal activities, including armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes, perpetrated by individuals and organized groups using vehicles with unauthorized tinted glass to conceal their identities.

“The exploitation of this enforcement gap has made it necessary and urgent for the Nigeria Police Force to resume full enforcement as a proactive measure to safeguard our communities,” the statement noted.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured Nigerians that the renewed enforcement would be carried out with professionalism, respect for citizens’ rights, and strict adherence to extant laws.

He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety, the rule of law, and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure national security.

The Police further urged motorists who require tinted glass permits to apply through approved channels and ensure full compliance with legal requirements ahead of the resumption date.
