Operatives of the Nigerian police attached to the National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) have tracked down and arrested some suspects who launched cyber attacks on the database of the popular Microsoft.

The suspects, according to the police high command, were traced to somewhere in Nigeria after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) launched an investigation into the data breach.

Daily Trust reports that Microsoft is a multinational technology giant and corporation, known for software like Windows, Office, and Azure cloud services.

Addressing journalists at the headquarters of National Cyber Crime Centre, Abuja on Thursday, the spokesman of the Police, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that one Okitipi Samuel was nabbed for the breach.

Hundeyin, a Chief Superintendent of Police, who was accompanied by the Director of NPF-NCCC, Uche Henry, a Commissioner of Police, said the police swung into action after they were contacted by the FBI.

He said, “This is a crime that involves Microsoft, the popular Microsoft. Sometimes back, Microsoft suffered some kinds of attacks where some criminals cloned Microsoft application.

“They were able to get confidential information of customers. Of course, Microsoft responded swiftly to protect the information of other customers, but that breach actually occurred.

“The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) commenced investigations into that breach, collaborating with Microsoft, working with the Secret Service of the United States.

“As the investigation progressed, it was established that these criminals were somewhere within Nigeria. So, at that point, they needed to contact a law enforcement agency in Nigeria to proceed with the investigation.

“They actually contacted the National Cyber Crime Centre. This is because NPF-NCCC has been certified as the best Cyber Crime Centre in Africa.”
