The Sokoto State Police Command has recorded breakthroughs in its intensified anti-crime operations with the arrest of the leader of the notorious “Sai Malam” cult and the exposure of a rape and abduction syndicate targeting young girls.
Addressing journalists in Sokoto on Friday, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ahmed Musa, said the operations were part of sustained efforts to restore peace, protect residents, and dismantle criminal networks across the state.
He recalled that on November 29, 2025, three members of the feared “Sai Malam” cult were arrested. Acting on further intelligence, operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit later apprehended the cult’s leader and chief priest, Mohammed Muktar, popularly known as “Sai Malam.”
A search of his residence, which also served as a shrine, led to the recovery of a live python allegedly used for ritual purposes, banners inscribed “SAI MALAM,” and assorted charms and fetish items. Police described the arrest as a significant step toward ending the cult’s reign of terror in affected communities.
In a separate operation, CP Musa disclosed that a serial rapist, Anas Sani of Gidan Igwai area, was arrested on December 9, 2025, following a complaint involving the abduction and rape of two teenage girls aged 17 and 18.
During interrogation, the suspect reportedly confessed to working with accomplices identified as Nafiu Mohammed, Adam Nura (alias Willy), and Mubarak Yusuf, who is currently at large.
Investigations revealed that the gang impersonated Peace Corps officials to lure victims to an office at GDSS Gidan Igwai, where they were intimidated, sexually assaulted, and secretly video-recorded for blackmail.
Police said no fewer than 28 victims have so far been linked to the syndicate. Exhibits recovered include a camouflage uniform and an identity card of the Sokoto State Master Peace Brigade allegedly used to intimidate victims.
CP Musa assured that discreet investigations are ongoing to apprehend fleeing suspects and ensure all those involved face prosecution.
Ahead of the Yuletide season, the Police issued a security advisory, warning that criminals often exploit festive movements and gatherings. Residents were urged to remain vigilant, secure their homes, verify the identity of anyone claiming to be security personnel, closely supervise young persons, avoid risky travel, and promptly report suspicious activities.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, calling on residents to remain law abiding and support the Police with timely and credible information to keep Sokoto State safe.
