Plateau State is forging a bold new path in global collaboration focused on youth empowerment, skills acquisition, and technical innovation.

In a statement on Saturday, Director of Press and Public Affairs to the Governor, Gyang Bere, said the vision gained momentum on Friday when Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, hosted the Italian Acting Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Iacopo Foti, at the Government House in Jos.

The high-level engagement centered on strengthening bilateral cooperation in technical and vocational education, with a spotlight on the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), a federal institution in Jos, as a key driver of skills development nationwide.

Governor Mutfwang expressed deep appreciation for Italy’s longstanding commitment to vocational excellence, recalling the establishment of the ITF in 1971 during the tenure of General Yakubu Gowon, a notable Plateau State indigene.

“We are proud to host such a strategic national institution here in Jos.

“Italy’s global leadership in vocational training and manufacturing presents a unique opportunity to equip our youth with practical, life-shaping skills,” the Governor said.

He also highlighted the longstanding relationship between Plateau State and Italy, noting Italian influence in the Government House’s furnishings and broader contributions to local culture, from fashion and cuisine to football.

“Italy has always had a footprint here, from furniture to fashion, pasta to football.

“We believe the future holds even greater potential for collaboration,” Mutfwang noted.

The Governor expressed the state’s openness to expanded cooperation, including cultural exchange, business partnerships, and enhanced technical education initiatives.

Mr. Iacopo Foti described the visit as long overdue, emphasizing Italy’s eagerness to partner with Plateau State and the ITF to share its expertise in vocational training and manufacturing.

“Nigeria has a vibrant, diverse youth population, and we’re excited to engage more deeply through platforms like the ITF.

“This visit has given us a better understanding of the potential for impactful partnerships,” Foti said.

Both sides agreed to sustain engagement and establish formal frameworks for collaboration, especially as the incoming Italian Ambassador prepares to assume duty in Nigeria.

Plans are already in motion for a technical session between the Italian Embassy and ITF officials to explore targeted areas of joint action.
