NUJ Kano Council Urges Government to Address Incessant Electricity Outages

On Tuesday at its congress meeting, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kano State Council, called on the state government to address the issue of incessant power outages.

The call was contained in a communiqué issued after the congress meeting, which had representatives of various chapels under the union in attendance.

The congress, which was presided over by the State Council Chairman of NUJ, Comrade Sulaiman Abdullahi Dederi, focused on addressing issues affecting journalism, the unity of its members, and broader concerns impacting the state.

In his opening remarks, Dederi commended members for their dedication to their professional duties and emphasized the importance of the meeting in fostering dialogue and collaboration.

During the session, the congress reviewed and adopted the council’s secretariat and financial reports. Members also deliberated on a range of pressing issues, leading to several resolutions which included:

  1. The Congress then observed the rampant felling of trees by individuals and organizations across the state, and urged the government and other relevant stakeholders to address the menace.
  2. The Congress also noted with dismay indiscriminate bush burning being perpetrated by groups and individuals, leading to the destruction of the ecosystem and of the ozone layer. The meeting, therefore, urged the culprits to desist from the practice, while calling on the government to check the problem.
  3. The Congress called on the state Commissioner of Health to chart ways of fighting Mosquitoes to prevent Malaria outbreaks in Rural and Urban areas.
  4. The Congress also called on the State Commissioner of Youth and Sports to consider purchasing a luxury bus for Kano Pillars to ease players’ transportation challenges.
  5. The Congress urged the State government to provide adequate fertilizer and other agricultural inputs to farmers on time to prepare for the rainy season farming.
  6. The Congress noted the incessant power outages and their adverse consequences on the socio-economic lives of the people of the State, and called on the stakeholders to address the issue.

The Congress commended Kano State Government for its effort to revive education and its provision of infrastructure such as roads, water, and Street light, the Correspondents Chapel for raising the sum of one million Naira and donating it to the family of its deceased member, Mr.Ted Odugwu.

The Congress then congratulated members of the Online Media Chapel on their recent inauguration by the NUJ and wished them success in their professional undertakings.
