The Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Dr Aminu Yusuf (Talban Wushishi), has died at the age of 66.

The Commission announced his death in a statement on Friday, saying he passed away in Abuja after a brief illness.

The statement, signed by the Director of Public Affairs Department, Mrs Adelayo Serifat Olurode, said Yusuf was born on April 15, 1960, in Wushishi, Niger State.

He was appointed and sworn in as the eighth substantive chairman of the Commission by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on December 3, 2025.

During his tenure, Yusuf pursued a seven-point agenda aimed at repositioning the Commission, with a focus on strengthening its operations and improving the production of reliable demographic data for national planning and development.

Before he was appointed NPC chairman, Yusuf held several public positions.

He served as Executive Chairman of Wushishi Local Government Area, member-elect of the Niger State House of Assembly, board member of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), and Special Adviser on Political Affairs to the Niger State governor.

The NPC described the late chairman as a dedicated patriot, astute administrator, and compassionate leader whose commitment to national development and the production of credible demographic data remained unwavering.

“On behalf of the Honourable Federal Commissioners, the Director-General, Management, and entire staff of the National Population Commission, we extend our deepest condolences to the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Government and people of Niger State, and the entire Yusuf family,” the statement said.

The Commission prayed Almighty Allah to forgive Yusuf’s shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus, and give his family, friends and associates the fortitude to bear the loss.
