The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has rejected the outcome of the Ghari/Tsanyawa State Assembly re-run election held on Saturday, August 16, in Kano State, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of bias in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Addressing journalists in Kano on Sunday, the NNPP State Chairman, Comrade Hashimu Dungurawa, alleged that INEC manipulated the process by cancelling results from the re-run polling units and relying on earlier results already contested in court.
“In Ghari Local Government, the re-run was conducted peacefully, but through manipulation by some unpatriotic politicians working with INEC officials, the APC candidate was declared winner,” he said.
Dungurawa also faulted the decision of INEC to announce the results at its Kano headquarters instead of the constituency collation centre, describing it as a breach of procedure that created room for irregularities.
The NNPP vowed to resist what it termed injustice and electoral malpractice, insisting that results signed by presiding officers should have been upheld.
Meanwhile, the party commended the conduct of the Shanono/Bagwai by-election, where its candidate emerged winner, praising security agencies for ensuring a peaceful process.
The APC and INEC have yet to respond to the allegations.
According to official results declared by INEC Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Waziri, APC’s Garba Ya’u Gwarmai secured 31,472 votes to defeat NNPP’s Yusuf Ali Maigado, who polled 27,931 votes.
