The National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Dr. Agbo Major, has stated that Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, does not influence the party’s alliance plans for the 2027 elections.

Dr. Major’s remarks followed Kwankwaso’s announcement during a meeting of his Kwankwasiyya group in Abuja on Thursday, where he suggested that the NNPP was open to forming alliances ahead of 2027.

The NNPP has been mired in a leadership tussle, with the party awaiting a final ruling from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to update its leadership records.

While Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya Movement claim control, the Major-led executive insists that their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kwankwaso expired after the 2023 elections and that he has since been expelled for alleged anti-party activities.

In a Friday statement issued in Lagos, Dr. Major dismissed the Abuja NEC meeting convened by Kwankwasiyya as illegitimate and void, stressing that its resolutions hold no weight against official party decisions or court rulings affirming NNPP leadership.

“Beyond the breach of trust, we are concerned that Kwankwaso continues to use the NNPP name to engage in negotiations and make destabilizing remarks,” Major said, citing his recent criticisms of the Federal Government.

He further warned that any alliance with Kwankwaso’s faction under the NNPP banner would be “at their own risk,” while reaffirming that the party remains open to Nigerians and committed to fair primaries for all aspirants.
