The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh warning that 20 states across the country are at risk of experiencing flash floods in July due to continued heavy rainfall.
In a weather alert released on Monday, NiMet cautioned that the intense downpours forecast for the month could trigger flooding in several regions, especially in vulnerable communities.
To reduce risk and safeguard lives, the agency urged residents in affected areas to take proactive safety measures. These include clearing blocked drainages, switching off electrical appliances during floods, keeping emergency kits within reach, and evacuating from flood-prone zones when necessary.
NiMet also advised the public to adopt practices that can help prevent mudslides.
The alert highlights growing concerns over climate-related disasters as Nigeria moves deeper into its rainy season, a period historically marked by increased flooding and displacement.
The 20 states listed as high-risk for flash floods this month are Sokoto, Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom.
